Il s'agit d'un moteur à cycle variable disposant d'une soufflante à double flux mais optimisée pour toutes les phases de vol. Le MTF combine donc ainsi les avantages d'une conception qui offre une faible surface frontale de l'ordre de 2 mètres carrés et ceux d'une propulsion à double flux (faible bruit au décollage puisque la vitesse d'éjection du gaz est ralentie, poussée accrue à tous les régimes et consommation spécifique réduite de 8% au décollage et en montée).
